Having Your Heart Out On Display For the World to Critique

23 Feb

We’ve heard writers say that writing a book is like giving birth.  We get that concept.

The part that we hadn’t explored until now was the publishing side.

We are leaning toward the idea of likening this process to sending your child off to school for the first time.  Up until this point, your project – book or child – has been fairly sheltered and coddled. Your love is unconditional for your project.  Usually, only family and close friends are allowed to get close to your project.  That select group gets to spend enough time with them to get to know them.  Only praise from these select people is expected, or even really allowed.

Then there comes a time when you feel that your project – either child or book – is ready to be shared.  You might feel torn about the readiness of your project. You send them off with trepidation and excitement.  You feel proud but worry that you might not have fully prepared them for the event.  Then you hold your breath and hope for the best.  There might be some suggestions, or comments, but until that first report comes in, there is no way to know how the outside world will judge your project.

In either case, it is like having your heart out on display for the world to critique.  It takes real courage.

We would like to send a heartfelt “Bravo” out to every artist, writer, and performer … and parent who has taken a chance to share a piece of themselves with the world.  It is definitely not for the faint of heart. 🙂
